Tips & tricks
Get the most out of Foyer
Small things that make a big difference — the shortcuts, automations and hidden features that save you typing and keep your kitchen up to date.
- 1
Cooking Mode reads your recipe for you
Any step that mentions a time — “simmer for 10 minutes,” “bake for an hour” — gets an automatic, tappable timer. No more juggling your phone's stock timer app while your hands are covered in flour.
- 2
Scan it, don't type it
Point your camera at a barcode and Foyer fills in the name, size, and category automatically — including sorting it straight into Freezer, Pantry, or wherever it belongs.
- 3
Found a recipe online? Just share it
From Safari (or any browser), tap Share → Foyer, and it pulls in the title, ingredients, and steps for you to review before saving. No retyping.
- 4
A photo of a cookbook page works too
Scan mode reads the page and sorts out ingredients from instructions — even on pages with no “Ingredients” heading at all.
- 5
“Surprise me” when you can't decide
It only pulls from recipes you can actually make right now with what's on hand — no suggestions for things you're missing half the ingredients for.
- 6
Search finds more than titles
Type an ingredient (“celery”) or a piece of equipment (“pellet grill”) and Foyer surfaces every recipe that uses it — not just ones with that word in the name.
- 7
Cook it, and Foyer remembers
Finishing a recipe automatically subtracts what you used from Inventory — no manual bookkeeping, and every deduction is reversible with one tap if you change your mind.
- 8
Leftovers aren't an afterthought
Tell Foyer how many servings you kept, and they show up as their own trackable item — ready to slot into tomorrow's lunch straight from the calendar.
- 9
“My Equipment” unlocks what you can cook
Tell Foyer what you own once, and Foyer's suggestions only show what you can make — one tap filters the Recipes list the same way. No more scrolling past recipes that need a deep fryer you don't have.
- 10
Scale before you start
Set the servings on the recipe first. Cooking mode, the timers and the inventory deduction all use that number.
- 11
Step out, come back
Leaving cooking mode mid-recipe loses nothing — the recipe shows Resume cooking, with your step and any running timers right where you left them.
- 12
Cook from the calendar
Open a recipe from a planned meal instead of from the Recipes tab: it starts at the servings you planned, and finishing marks that meal Cooked.
